Setting Information: ‘Japan’? What’s that? You’re in the Great Japanese Empire now. Whether this confusion can be attributed to an alternate universe scenario or my mediocre knowledge of foreign customs, every single character seems to refer to Japan this way. Apart from that, no other countries are mentioned as being different, except for America, which is crowded with spirits, but still inhabited by humans. Anyways, it would be pretty much impossible to fully describe Ouka’s world, as pretty much anything you can imagine exists there. There’s an underworld (Hell), another underworld (Below ground), magical cities used for spirit containment, all sorts of mythical creatures and Death Star-ish city-wide defense systems. Also, Santa Claus is buff. Basically, KKN’s world functions solely on Rule of Cool/Funny/Fanservice, however ridiculous it may be. Considering how Ouka’s average trip to the supermarket ends with him fending off aliens/scientists/robots, it’s no wonder how his organization, the Paranormal Phenomena Bureau of Measures, has proved insanely successful.
Portal Location: Great Japanese Empire’s Paranormal Phenomena Bureau of Measures’ HQ’s interior.
Personality: At first glance, Ouka seems to be your average person. Calm, collected, highly aware of how to be polite and act around people, etc. He’s pretty much completely stable, considering the guy lost both parents at an early age, spent the next twenty-something years with a mild addiction to work and was then forced to marry someone with a completely different personality to his or face the end of the world. Apart from his childhood friend, a Bureau agent who went by the name of Shinigami, we never see any people who were close to Ouka before he entered the family. This comes as no surprise, as Ouka is pretty adamant about the fact that he cannot love anyone. Sure, he can like people, and protect them if he cares enough about them, but his experiences as a child probably left him with a very negative view on love, which was only strengthened by spending two decades with Shinigami, who felt the same way. It’s also mentioned several times that he is not good with relationships, which could be a product of the aforementioned problems. This is evidenced by his initial ineptitude as a father and the fact that he’s prone to forgetting anniversaries.
Ouka is also a considerably responsible individual. Not only is he able to keep up with all the paperwork he’s assigned, he also finds enough time to do pretty much everything for the family. The moment he goes sick, the Midarezaki household becomes an oversized dumpster. His responsibility does not stop him from showing a sillier side from time to time, as he occasionally starts to really get into Kyouka’s schemes.
Reason for Joining: Ouka has a family. Which is also considered his job by the Bureau. Which is pretty set on not having him go anywhere. He’s also been working for the government for a while, so it’s unlikely he would mess up the paperwork. How am I going to come up with an excuse for this one?…S-Shanghai-ing? Someone probably saw him around and thought that having an actual agent working at Confuto Ordinatio wouldn’t be so bad. The Bureau will probably start to work with the aim of returning him quickly, or else greet failure with a temporary babysitter for his family (Which will, in all likeliness, not last a week).
Position Desired: Enforcer. Ouka has been working as an agent for the Paranormal Phenomena Bureau of Measures since he was a child, which has earned him a slight reputation for his diligence amongst the workforce. In the manga, it’s implied that he became the Head of the Operations Department at age eight, and is certain to have acquired the rank of Captain by twenty-seven. Despite having no more combat skills than you would expect from an extremely well-trained human, he shows himself to be a very capable leader and tactician during a couple of episodes.
