Player Name: Albiel Character Name: Ouka Midarezaki Canon: Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
Background: ((I’m taking this section out of my app for NW. Hope that’s okay.)) Ouka's parents died when he was three years old. Many characters would be traumatized by such an event, but Ouka got over it after joining the Great Japanese Empire's Paranormal Phenomena Bureau of Measures at the age of seven (Yeah, I guess agencies in that universe don't really require prior experience. Or puberty, for that matter.), where he met Shiruku Kirisaki, also known as 'Shinigami'. Though their first encounter involved an unhealthy amount of punching, they eventually became good friends. It could definitely be said that Shinigami developed feelings for Ouka during this time (Even if she claimed to not love anyone), though Ouka only returned them in the form of constantly going on, for lack of a better term, friendly dates with her.
Flash-forward twenty years. Ouka is now Squad Captain of the... do I seriously need to write the organization’s name again? A-Anyways, he is intensely dedicated to his job and has a sense of justice that stops a random catgirl from stealing food from a fruit stand. Except, the catgirl, Kyouka, wasn't a random occurrence at all; she was waiting for Ouka to appear so that she could begin an operation Ouka's organization was planning. They never really state why it had to be Ouka. Apparently, nobody told him about it either, probably because the Bureau is filled with jerks.
Anyways, a basic summary of the plan is to gather all the descendants of a monster called Enka, each one of them holding the possibility of one day destroying the world, putting them in a family and observing which one is the most likely to snap and go all anti-Christ. Each one of this family members, save for Ouka, had their full name changed to something ending with '-ka Midarezaki'. Among Ouka's 'sons' are a cybernetic Predator-like killing machine (Hyouka), a lion (Teika) a jellyfish (Gekka), an innerly depressed girl (Yuuka), and an openly gay man that is attracted to him (Ginka). He’s also forced to marry Kyouka, who has a completely different personality from his. So, yeah, you can kind of see life kicking Ouka on the face (Not always metaphorically) for a great part of the show.
The rest of his part in the show is Ouka pretty much going along with everyone's schemes and problems. One thing he remains consistent on is not allowing any member of his family get hurt, going to the extent of beating a mad scientist, staging a heroic rescue and taking down a mafia family for them. He also takes on the role of father more and more as time goes on, stopping his dates with Shinigami (But still remaining her friend (Even though Shinigami really, really tries for him to be more than that)) and going on vacations with them. He also drops the Japanese honoratives for all of them (Except Chika, but she came later), which is really something when you consider he still uses them with Shinigami, a friend from twenty years ago. At the end of the series, an alien girl called Oasis falls in love with Ouka, which puts him in a very complicated position. This problem makes his family start losing their trust in him, despite Ouka not returning Oasis's love (at least not in a romantic way). The issue is quickly resolved when Oasis returns to space. At the very end, Kyouka leaves the Midarezaki household so she can search for her original home, though Ouka willingly sees her off and, holding absolutely nothing against her, says that her true home will always be with her family. It can be safely stated that Ouka kept taking care of his family after Kyouka left.
